AMS: The Shortest Great Layover in Europe
Most European hub airports require 40-60 minutes to reach the city. Schiphol connects directly to Amsterdam Centraal in 17 minutes. For a 6-hour connection, that's the difference between seeing nothing and seeing something real.
Train to the city
Intercity trains run from Schiphol to Amsterdam Centraal every 10 minutes, 24/7. The ticket is around €5 and takes 17 minutes. Get an OV-chipkaart at the airport or tap with a contactless card.
What works on a short layover
Skip the Anne Frank House (queue is 2+ hours without prebooking). The Rijksmuseum is worth it — Vermeer and Rembrandt in one building, €22.50. The canal ring is free and takes as long as you want.
Visa
Amsterdam is Schengen. US passports: 90-day visa-free access, no stamp required. Other nationalities vary — check before you go.
