18 Hours in Dubai
Most people spend their Dubai layover staring at the departure board. That's a mistake. DXB is 37 minutes from downtown, and downtown is worth it.
Getting out
The Dubai Metro Red Line runs from the airport to Union Station in about 37 minutes. A day pass costs 22 AED (under $6). No need for a taxi unless you're pressed for time.
What 18 hours buys you
Enough to see the Burj Khalifa observation deck at sunset, walk through the Old Souk in Deira, and eat a proper meal. You don't need the full tourist circuit. Pick two neighborhoods and commit.
Visa situation
US, EU, and UK passports get free 48-hour transit visas. Most others need to check in advance. DXB handles over 90 million passengers a year — the visa desk is fast.
The sleep question
If your connection is overnight, the Mövenpick adjacent to Terminal 1 is consistent and connected by walkway. For a shorter stopover, the Al Maha Lounge (Marhaba, day pass) has showers and real food.
