New York JFK: What to Do on a Layover

Getting from the airport

JFK to city center: 50 minutes by metro (AirTrain + E/J/Z Subway). Fare is $9. Trains run every 10 minutes. Service runs 00:00 to 23:59. Skip the taxi unless your connection is under 5 hours.

What to do in New York

The stops worth making: Times Square and Broadway, Central Park, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Brooklyn Bridge walk. You do not need the full tourist circuit. Pick two and commit.

New York is visa-free for US passports. No application, no fee. The border process at JFK is standard — budget 30 minutes.

How long do you need

The minimum useful layover is 4 hours. That gives you 50 minutes in each direction plus about 50 minutes on the ground. Up to 24 hours is a proper overnight.
